Privacy policy

This page states exactly what happens to your files and your data when you use Inkclip. Where a claim below can be tested, it's written so it can be checked, not just promised.

The short version

Every tool on this site processes your file on your own device, in your browser. Nothing you drop into a tool (the video, the GIF, the images, the subtitle file) is uploaded to Inkclip‘s servers or seen by us, in any tool, in the way the site works today.

What never leaves your device

  • The file you’re editing: video, GIF, images, or subtitle file.
  • Its filename.
  • Any transcript the auto-captioning tool generates.
  • Any text you type into a caption or a style control.

What does leave your device, and why

WhatWhyWhere it goes
The page itself and its codeLoading the site at allInkclip‘s hosting
The auto-captioning tool’s speech-recognition model, downloaded once per browserRunning the captioner locally requires the model files themselves; the tool shows their size as they download, and they’re cached afterwards so they aren’t fetched againInkclip‘s file storage
An ad requestThis is how the site is fundedGoogle’s advertising systems
Visit statistics from Google Analytics: the page you open and the page you came from, which tool you use and whether a job finished, your browser, your device type and your approximate locationUnderstanding which tools are used and how visitors move between them, in aggregateGoogle (Google Analytics)
A page counter that sets no cookies: the page, where you came from, your browser, device type and country, and how fast the page loadedCounting every visit, including visitors who decline analytics cookiesCloudflare (Cloudflare Web Analytics)

That table is the whole list. No filename, file size, media content, or transcript text is ever included in an ad request or an analytics event.

What’s stored, cached, and never stored

  • Cached, on your device only: the auto-captioning model and supporting files, so they don’t re-download on your next visit. This is a normal browser cache, not something Inkclip can read.
  • Stored by this site, in this browser only: three entries in this site’s local storage, and no cookies. One holds your caption style (font size, position, background, color), so it carries over between tools, and whether you’ve closed the consent notice. The other two belong to the auto-captioning tool. One is a flag set just before each run and cleared when the run finishes, so that if a run doesn’t finish, the tool starts with a shorter clip limit next time. The other is a record of how captioning has gone in this browser: how many runs didn’t finish, an id for the page visit that counted the last one (replaced by the next, never added up), speed measurements, and the model setups that failed to load. While a run is in progress, the record also holds when it started and your clip’s length. That length is the only thing in any of these entries taken from your file, and it’s removed when the run ends, or, if the run didn’t finish, the next time you open the captioning tool. None of it is sent anywhere.
  • Held while you work, in this browser only: a result, the earlier versions the page keeps so Undo can bring them back, and the versions you undid, kept so Redo can bring them back, are held in this tab’s memory or, for some results, written to a private file area this site has in your browser. Undo steps back through the last few results, one at a time, and Start over goes back to the file you picked. Only the most recent versions are kept, not every step. That lasts while you move between this site’s tools, not only on the page that made it. A version is deleted when it is older than the steps Undo keeps, when a new result replaces the versions you undid, when your device needs the room for the next step, or when you pick another file, clear, start over, run that step again, close the tab, or leave this site’s tools for another page. If the browser closes the tab before a file can be deleted, it stays in that area until you next open one of this site’s tools, which deletes it, or until you clear this site’s data in your browser. The page makes up each file’s name, and the name never includes your filename.
  • Moving on to another tool with a result you just made, in this browser only: that hand-off lives only in this tab’s memory. It adds nothing to the list above and writes nothing to storage. It lasts only while you keep moving between this site’s tools in the same tab, and it ends the moment you reload the page, leave these tools for another page, or close the tab. Opening a new tab doesn’t end it: this tab keeps what it’s doing, and the new tab starts its own, with nothing carried over.
  • Never stored by us: your media files, your transcripts and your filenames. On your device, transcripts and filenames live only in the tab’s memory, and closing the tab clears them. The only media files this site writes to your browser’s storage are the working copies of results, described above, with the lifetime described there.
  • Not collected at all: there are no accounts on this site, so there’s nothing tied to your identity to store in the first place.

Advertising and cookies

Inkclip shows ads served by Google, which is how the tools stay free. Google and its advertising partners may use cookies or similar technology to serve ads, including ads based on your visits to this and other sites. Google’s ad code sets some of these cookies on this site’s own domain (Google names them __gads and __gpi), and it may keep similar data in your browser’s storage for this site. They’re Google’s, not ours, and none of them holds anything from your files. If you’re in the EEA, the UK or Switzerland, Google’s consent message appears first. Until you choose, Google’s ad code sets no ad cookies, and if you refuse storage it still sets none; your choice itself is remembered. If you allow storage but not personalization, you get non-personalized ads, which still use cookies to limit how often you see an ad, to count ads and to prevent fraud. Either way, you get the full tool. Elsewhere, Google may set its cookies when an ad loads. You can review or adjust how Google personalizes ads for you at Google Ads Settings and learn more about interest-based advertising generally at www.aboutads.info.

Analytics

Inkclip uses two analytics services.

Cloudflare Web Analytics counts every visit. It sets no cookies and uses no local storage. It records the page, where you came from, your browser, your device type and country, and how fast the page loaded.

Google Analytics tells us which tools are used, whether a job finishes, and whether visitors go from one tool to another. For each of these it receives the page address, the page you came from, your browser and device type, your approximate location, and a label from a short fixed list: the tool’s name, whether a job succeeded, failed or was cancelled, and, for the auto-captioner, whether its model downloaded or your device cannot run it. It never receives your file, its name, size or length, or anything inside it. Google states that Google Analytics does not log or store IP addresses; your country is worked out from your connection and the address itself is not kept.

Cookies and your choice. In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, Google’s consent message asks first. Until you accept, or if you decline, Google Analytics sets no cookie on your device and receives only a signal without cookies: the page address, the page you came from, your browser and whether you have agreed. Every tool works the same either way. Elsewhere, and in those regions once you accept, Google Analytics sets two cookies on this site’s own domain, _ga and one that begins _ga_, which last up to two years and tell visits apart; there is no banner outside those regions. They are Google’s, not ours, and none of them holds anything from your files. Inkclip does not turn on Google signals or ad personalization for this data.

How long it is kept, and how to opt out. Google Analytics keeps the detailed record of each visit for two months; the totals added up from it are kept longer. Google offers a browser add-on that stops Google Analytics measuring you on any site, and most ad blockers and tracking-protection settings stop both services.

Children’s privacy

Inkclip isn’t directed at children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children. The site has no accounts and no data-entry fields tied to identity for any age group.

If a server-based option is ever added

Every tool on this site processes files locally today; there’s no server-based alternative offered. If one is ever added, it will be an explicit choice you make in the moment (never a silent fallback), and this page will be updated first to state plainly what would be sent, to whom, and for how long it would be kept, before the option is ever turned on for anyone.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes in a way that affects what leaves your device, the “last updated” date below will change and the change will be described in plain terms, not buried in a version number.
